3 Day Weekend is both a performance and material for a live video shoot. Initially commissioned by Performa and presented by Salon 94 in New York, Herring is creating a new version specifically for Austin. 3 Day Weekend unfolds as a series of interactions built over the course of three days with a group of people chosen through an open application process. The actions are physical, dance related, mostly unrehearsed, and therefore unpredictable. Oliver Herring both “directs” the actions and films the footage. According to the artist:
- “I am looking for applications from a wide variety of people from which to choose between 5 and 10 participants. Like in all of my work, no previous experience in performance, theater, dance or art is necessary. I look for personality and motivation. Your age can range from 1 to 100 years old, with any body-type, of any gender, race, creed, religion, culture, political affiliation, or economic bracket.
The performance will be physical and probably somewhat exhausting. However, I’ll tailor whatever happens within your limitations and comfort zone. I’ve worked with many people who’ve never done anything like it before. The performance will be built on our collective energy, ability and interests. However, it’ll probably include throwing yourself into the arms of a stranger or two, and you’ll end up doing something that vaguely resembles some sort of dance! Don’t worry, we’ll meet a few times before.
The performance will stretch over three days, each day will be different and you don’t need to participate in all of it. The project will be amazingly fun, an utterly unique experience and remembered for posterity as a video.”
Applicants, please email Oliver Herring with your age, profession (if any), gender, your preferred contact information, and tell us why you want to participate. Applications are due April 10th. From the applications, Oliver will select approximately 20 people to meet via Skype. On-site meetings will take place on April 21 and 22, from which he will make his final selection. A flexible schedule is required as participants must be available to meet individually and together several times leading up to the actual performance.
This project is co-presented by Fusebox Festival, Arthouse, and testperformancetest in conjunction with Salon 94 and Performa.
